The Best and The Worst of Times
by Henri Schmit
A
compilation of thirty non-fiction stories from the author's
own
experiences. Part I of the book comprises fourteen (14)
pieces about Growing up in the Old Country and
include such
chapters as Stories
about Patriots and cowardly Collaborators in which the author opens the
book with a story about a young woman who has her head shaved
by members of the Resistance, a revenge exacted upon women
who had slept with Germans during the war. Other notable chapters are,
Accidental Death in the
Boxing Ring, Adventures in the Military Police and several others taken
from the author's memories of living in Europe. In part II the author
undertakes the adventure of moving to a new land with
twelve stories about: Encounters in Canada and
includes
chapters such as, Dying of Thirst in the
Brewery, Quebec's ludicrous Language Laws, On becoming a Grandfather,
Remembering Mordecai Richler and several others. Part III sees
the
author return to Europe on a December trip in 2005 in which he writes
on a short stay in Paris, a lenghtier stay in the Grand Duchy
of
Luxembourg,
and a one day visit to the famous
war monument, The Mardasson in Bastogne, Belgium.
